Description

The Welser are a patrician family from Augsburg and Nuremberg who have amassed their wealth as wholesalers. The Welsers have been in the books in Augsburg since 1246. In the Middle Ages, the Welsh people owned factories in Antwerp, Lyon, Madrid, Nuremberg, Seville, Lisbon, Venice and Rome, as well as Santo Domingo and Venezuela. Because of their wealth, these German merchants were in a position to act as financiers of rulers in various European states.
