The Fossa Eugeniana is a seventeenth-century unfinished canal between the Rhine and the Meuse. The intention was to extend it to the Scheldt. From there, the canal connection to the Flemish coastal ports would be improved. Work on the 50 km long section between Rhine and Meuse was started in 1626, but never completed. Some remnants of it have been preserved in the landscape. The canal between Maas and Scheldt was not started. The sailing connection between the Scheldt and the Flemish coast was somewhat improved.
