Johannes Molanus, born Jan van der Meulen or Vermeulen (Rijsel, 1533 – Leuven, September 18, 1585) was a professor of theology during the Counter-Reformation. As the founder of the new hagiography, he contributed to a more scientific approach to the lives of saints, as later picked up by the Bollandists. His timid vision of depicting saints has influenced art history. His posthumous Natales Sanctorum Belgii (1595) treats the vitae of the Dutch saints according to name day.
