Verkade albums were created in 1903 when the biscuit manufacturer Verkade added pictures to its products, which could be collected and pasted into specially made albums. It started with three fairytale albums, with pictures bought in Germany. These releases were a great success, on which Verkade decided to release other albums, about various aspects of nature and the landscape in the Netherlands. In the period 1903 to 1940, 30 albums were released successively. The total circulation of the printed albums was approximately 3.2 million with a record number of 30 million individual pictures for pasting. In 1904 Jac. P. Thijsse was approached by the Verkade company; eventually he would become the author of 18 of the 30 Verkade albums that have been released. The young Jan Voerman jr. Was one of the first illustrators (married family). It started in 1906 with the albums Spring, Summer, Autumn and Winter. All released albums had huge circulation for Dutch standards, except for the album Friesland; this album is now one of the most sought-after Verkade albums by collectors. Due to the First World War, there was an acute shortage of paper, so only a small edition could be made; after a small second edition in 1919 Verkade temporarily stopped with the albums and pictures, in anticipation of better times. Annual publishing was resumed in 1925. The last album was released in 1940.
